Residential Delivery Indicator (RDI)
A Residential Delivery Indicator (RDI) is a code used by the United States Postal Service (USPS). It is used to identify whether an address is a residential or a business address. The RDI code is a part of the Intelligent Mail barcode (IMb) that’s printed on mail pieces. It helps the USPS to sort and deliver mail more efficiently.
The RDI code is important because it helps the USPS to identify the type of address. Which in turn determines the level of service that’s required. For example, business addresses, or commercial addresses, may require a higher level of service, such as delivery during regular business hours, while a residential address may only require delivery during regular mail delivery hours.
There are three types of RDI codes:
Residential (R) – this code indicates that the address is a residence, such as a house, apartment, or mobile home.
Commercial (C) – this code indicates that the address is commercial, such as an office building, retail store, or warehouse.
Unknown (N) – this code indicates that the USPS is unable to determine the type of address, either because the information isn’t available or because the address is new and not yet in the USPS database.
It’s important to note that RDI codes are determined based on the information that is available to the USPS. In some cases, the USPS may not have the most up-to-date information. It can lead to an RDI code that’s incorrect. In these cases, it’s important for the mail recipient to contact the USPS and provide updated information.
For businesses, having the correct RDI code is crucial as it can affect the level of service they receive, as well as the cost of mailing. It also helps them to ensure timely delivery.

It’s important for businesses and individuals to ensure that their RDI code is accurate in order to receive the correct level of service. And avoid any delays or misdelivery.
